About Emmaus
Emmaus Educational Services is an initiative intended to assist students, clergy and laity to better understand the biblical world. Whether in Israel, Turkey or Greece, our on-site study of the biblical accounts deepens the richness of the written word. Our aim is to introduce you to the land, the languages, and the literature of the Old and New Testaments in order to illuminate the meaning of the biblical text.
Why the name Emmaus?
In Luke 24 we read about two followers of Jesus who traveled from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus. These disciples discussed the recent events of the death and resurrection of Jesus. As they drew near to Emmaus, the risen Christ joined them on their journey. He explained to them what was written about himself in the Scriptures. At dinner that evening in the breaking of bread, he was made known to them. After he had departed, they remarked to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us as he spoke to us on the road?”
As we journey across the biblical stage, study the Scriptures, and break bread together, it is our prayer that like the two on the road to Emmaus we also might proclaim, "Did not our hearts burn within us as the Lord speaks to us on the way?"
